If you have a driving license other than Japan and drive in Japan, you must have one of the following licenses.

About Deposit

when you make a reservation, you have to keep a deposit of 100,000 yen (tax included)

if you return the car safely, we will return the deposit.

Please select a deposit from the option selection items and settle with a credit card in advance.

Please note that if you do not pay the deposit in advance, your reservation will not be completed.

 

① Domestic driver's license (resident in Japan)

・Standard domestic driving license issued in Japan (for those who stay in Japan)
 

Caution

Those who are registered in the Basic Resident Register Card of Japan or who have been registered as an alien must meet the following conditions to drive a car in Japan with an international driver's license.

① Expiration date of international license

② Stay outside Japan for three consecutive months or more and one year from the day of re-entry.

*Japanese translations can be issued at embassies and consulates in each country, or JAF branches throughout Japan. As for Taiwan, translations issued by JAF or the East Asian Association are required.

 

② International driver's license (issued under the Geneva Convention)

*You must show your passport before renting

*You cannot drive within Japan with a Japanese international driver's license issued in Japan.

*The international driver's license is valid for one year from the date of issue and one year from the date of entry.

 

international driving permits that are NOT valid in Japan. 

  • International driving permits based on the Vienna Convention (1968), Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943), and others that come with different formats (regardless if it’s issued in a country signatory to the Geneva Convention) are NOT valid.
  • International driving permits issued by unauthorized agencies or private entities (ex. IDL, IAA, KIDA, IDD, IADA, ITDL, etc.)
  • International driving permits issued in a country NOT party to the Geneva Convention (even those permits that resemble/ have the same format as permits based on the Geneva Convention).
  • The issuing country of a local driver’s license and an international driving permit are different regardless if it was issued in a country signatory to the Geneva Convention (ex. local driver’s license issued in America and an international driving permit issued in Canada).

 

③ Foreign driver's license (Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Estonia, Monaco)

*You must show your passport before renting

*If you have the above-listed foreign driver's license, you may carry the Japanese translation document of the driver's license with you, and is valid for one year from the date of entry.

 

Driving in Japan with an International Driving Permit

To drive in Japan, you will be required to have a valid International Driving Permit. Please check if you hold one of the following:

・International Driving Permit (under the Geneva Convention, Convention on International Road Traffic of 19  September 1949)
・Foreign driving license (issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, and Monaco)
 ・ Japanese Translation Letter

Driving With a Foreign Driver’s License & Official Japanese Translation

The following three documents must be presented:

①Foreign Driver’s License of Respective Countries

Driver’s license issued in Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, and Monaco.

②Official Japanese Translation

Only translations obtained from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) or the respective countries’ embassies/consulates in Japan are acknowledged as official. Official translation`s expiry date is the same as your local driver’s license, make sure that your car rental date is within the validity period of your license. Please note that regardless of your license validity period, you are only allowed to drive for 1 year starting from the date you landed in Japan.
※If there are any changes on the driver’s license. (e.g. address, etc.), please reapply for a new Japanese translation document.
※For Taiwan driver’s license, only Japanese translations issued by the East Asia Relations Commission or Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) are acknowledged.

Regarding International Driving Permit

When you drive a car in Japan with an International Driving Permit.

*You're required to show your passport and International Driving Permit together.
*Stamp of your entry date to Japan on your passport will be mandatory.
If you enter through the "Automatic Gate" at the airport, please inform the staff that you need a stamp on your passport and have it stamped.
You will not be able to rent a car without the stamp.

・International Driving Permit should be issued by the contracting parties to the Geneva Convention and should comply with the format set out in the Convention.
*You cannot drive in Japan without an International Driving Permit issued by the Prefectural Public Safety Committee.
*The validity of the International Driving Permit is one year after the issue.

Limitation for those who are recorded in the Basic Resident Registration System

If you're recorded in the Basic Resident Registration System (Japanese or foreigners staying in Japan for a medium to long period) and come back to Japan within 3 months after leaving Japan, you might be unable to drive in Japan even if you could meet the above requirements.
